Setting up your unmanaged VPS with a TurnKey system

The easiest way to get your unmanaged VPS up and running is using one of our prebuilt TurnKey setups.

This article applies if you chose one of the following OS templates:
turnkey-collabtive-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-drupal7-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-gitlab-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-joomla25-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-magento-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-moodle-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-observium-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-orangehrm-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-owncloud-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-prestashop-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso
turnkey-sugarcrm-13.0-wheezy-amd64.iso

Once you get your welcome email you just need to log in and go to the overview for your new VPS. If it's not already running you just need to click the Startup button.

Wait a few moments for the server to boot up and click the Console button.

You will need to have Java installed on your computer, and you may need to setup security exceptions for the console to work correctly.

This is the first step of the setup process. You want to choose the first option. From here on, you just keep selecting Next.

Now you need to enter and confirm your root password. It should be 12+ characters and a mix of character types for optimum security. We recommend using a password generator to create a secure password.

Then enter a password for the root MySQL account. This is often the same as your root password.

Whichever script you're using for the turnkey system, you'll be asked to create a password for the administrator account.

Then you'll be asked for the email address for your admin account.

You can sign up for TurnKey Linux's backup and DNS service, but it's not needed for the system to work. We are going to skip it.

You can setup security updates, but until networking has been configured it won't work correctly.

We need to setup the network as a static IP.

For the different settings use
IP Address: The IP in your welcome email
Netmask: 255.255.255.192
Default Gateway: 69.10.62.129
Name Server: 8.8.8.8

Then you need to select the Back option to go back to the main screen.

Then we need to reboot the server.
